Media Advisory - Update on Seaway Closing (January 5, 2018)
January 5, 2018 -
The Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation has been working around the clock since January 1 to dislodge the Federal Biscay from the U.S. Snell lock where it has been immobilized by heavy ice build-up. Work has been underway to melt the ice around the vessel using pressurized steam and additional tug boats have been brought in to assist. Progress is being made, but the extreme weather conditions are posing challenges and slowing progress. The intent remains to get all five remaining vessels, including the Federal Biscay, out of the Seaway System for the winter. The SLSDC will issue an advisory once the vessel has been safely dislodged and navigation is resumed.
