MASSENA, NY – On Wednesday, August 25, 2021, members of the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Environment Division, and U.S. Coast Guard will be conducting an Oil Boom Deployment exercise at the Massena Intake. The exercise is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. While the exercise is taking place, access at the Massena Intake will be limited to one boat ramp. The upper parking lot of the intake will be used to stage work boats, boom deployment trailers, and an Incident Command Structure.
During the drill, an oil boom will be placed in the water at the northern entrance to the intake. Boat access into and out of the intake will be permitted. During the deployment of the boom, there may be higher than normal boat traffic at the intake. The scheduled activities are only a drill and at no time will any oil products be introduced into the water.
